Greek Meatballs (Keftedakia)

March 3, 2014 by: Zoe Vlachos Appetizer, Recipes

I created this meatball recipe years ago, when I made the mistake of planting mint in my garden, instead of in pots. It spread and spread!  I had so much mint and couldn’t take another mojito!  I needed to find a use for those fragrant leaves!  After riffling through several recipes, finally, I remembered my grandparents traditional Greek meatballs- with mint in them.  I fiddled around and came up with a recipe that screams DELICIOUS!  The flavour is heightened even more when drizzled with lemon juice after cooking.

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, pureed (in food processor or with very fine grater)
  • 2 garlic cloves, pureed
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 cup fresh mint or 1/2 cup dry mint
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley or 4 teaspoons dry parsley
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • juice from 1 lemon

Combine all of the ingredients (except for the oil and lemon juice) in a large bowl. Using your hands mix the ingredients well.  Use approximately 1 tablespoon of the mixture to form each meatball. Heat olive oil in large skillet over medium heat and fry the meatballs until golden brown and no longer pink inside. Remember to finish them off with lemon juice! They will melt in your mouth- enjoy!

  • Yum! This is such an easy recipe. Can’t wait to make it this weekend served with that dandelion salade you posted! Thanks for posting this!
